Lads, Eshays, Hipsters, Westys, Weed, Lil Jon, Indy, Ryuto, Jinman, Ant, Paul, Andy, Crez, Kayo and Cam. These are the mix of Sydney fans/fiends of the WU-TANG CLAN who came for their first gig at the enmore last Thursday, also a start to the events of last week's epic weekend.
Seemingly coming out of nowhere, word spread that they might do a gig after some ?melbourne skate/punk show? in the Syds and i was definitely skeptical to them hitting the shores at all. Lets face it, the clan hasn't been the same since ODB died with rumors of "creative control" (RZA making shitty beats) and some members getting more success than others and not returning to their roots and "keeping it real" (as if you wouldn't sell out if you had the chance! look at Sheckler!). Oh yeah and does anyone notice how Mef is like immune to all this, he had like a PG TV show with Red about being stoners without any evidence of weed or smoke at all, fuck the what?!
But back to the matter we bought the tickets and the show happened. I remember on the train there, we were making hypotheticals of who we would trade (U-GOD) for the ones that already announced were a no show (Mef, Ghostface, ODB dead) and how RZA can't flow over his own beats (Triumph). Well we got to the doors to meet up with Ant and sure enough there was a small piece of paper pinned up, some dudes flaked. "U-GOD & MASTA KILLA WILL NOT PERFORM TONIGHT" First reaction was a LOL, no real biggie. That left us with 4/9 - Raekwon, GZA, Inspecktah Deck and RZA (is Cappadonna counted as a member yet? was he there?) which is probably the best collection of like straight lyrical dudes in the crew (bar RZA). They all showed and killed it the only problem was times when it was like, oh shit yeh Gravel Pit! oh wait...none of these dudes have verses on this song....bummer.
Their set was kinda weird too as they did all of their classics straight from the beginning and kinda burnt out and dragged on to the end, to quote Ryuto: "It got kinda CBF". But still it was mad to see them do Wu-Tang Clan Aint Nothin' to Fuck With' and C.R.E.A.M Live and in the flesh for the first and maybe last time ever. It was also cool to see Raekwon and his stockiness aswell as them all yelling over eachother when trying to talk to the crowd. So the overall verdict......SICKKKK.
Oh yeah and also a special note to the beginning act Lil Jon who was okay and ultimate lols. Between songs he talked in his "mild-mannered citizen" voice just like in Chapelle. I think he caught alot of people off guard when he first came out, everyone ready to boo but he was actually pretty enegretic. Dont act like you dont know the songs! (I see ya Jinman!). Also i feel bad for Ryuto when that gay eshay pyramid collapsed on him. shotnot.
Oh yeah sorry for the lack of photos, we are useless without Prez's 3 megapixel machine.
ON another note altogether... has anyone seen the espionage collabos with reebok? Someone got fired over this shit lol.
A mixture of everything it kinda reminded me of this....
P.S.
Also props to Kayo for like showing up to the gig after spending 4 hours in jail that same day, I shit you not. Is Kayo realer than U-God? Some would say yes lol
